ATLANTA – Windsong Properties, Atlanta’s leading Active Adult courtyard homebuilder was awarded a distinguished Livable Communities “special recognition” honor for its Somerset community in Woodstock by the AARP and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) on January 19, 2010 at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas.

“We are extremely honored and humbled by this award,” said Steve Romeyn, managing partner at Windsong Properties. “To be recognized on a national level by quality organizations such as AARP and NAHB is very special.”

Every home that Windsong Properties builds meets EasyLiving Homes® standards, which includes no-step access, wide doorways, lever handles, and other amenities that facilitate changing life situations. In addition, the homes at Somerset are qualified by Southface as EarthCraft Homes; assuring they have a lower cost to operate, are healthier and more comfortable and reduce their environment.

AARP and the NAHB created the joint awards program in 2007 for builders, remodelers, architects and developers in order to recognize forward-looking companies that have constructed creative and unique homes and communities with accessible features that improve the daily comfort, ease of use, and safety, of all their residents, no matter what their ages or physical abilities.The awards are presented annually for projects that incorporate such aspects as:

• design elements that accommodate the needs of all residents with all levels of physical ability from children through grandparents;
• easy access to community services and features such as retail, restaurants, medical, social and cultural activities, as well as viable transportation options;
• improved energy efficiency and enhanced site design; and
• better communication with key stakeholders

A panel of expert judges appointed by NAHB and AARP reviewed applications and selected the finalists. Judging criteria varied from category to category, but points were awarded based on: 1) Universal Design Features; 2) Ease of Maintenance and Energy Efficiency; 3) Exterior Design and Landscaping/Site Design; 4) Incorporation of Livable Community Design Features; and 5) Stakeholder Involvement.

Somerset is located just two and a half miles west of I-575. Take I-75 North to I-575 North to Exit 8. Travel west on Towne Lake Parkway, staying straight on Eagle Drive.  Turn left off Eagle Drive onto Putnam Ford Road. Somerset is half a mile on the left.
